PgEdge launches enterprise Postgres and fully open source distributed components to power scalable Postgresql deployments.
PgEdge, a prominent player in the open source enterprise Postgres landscape, has unveiled pgEdge Enterprise Postgres, a robust PostgreSQL distribution tailored for enterprise needs. This launch is complemented by a significant shift, as the company transitions its distributed Postgres components to an open source licensing model.
This strategic decision positions PgEdge among a select group of companies offering a fully standard, open source Postgres solution that caters to both distributed and non-distributed workloads. The distributed components, which include Spock (multi-master logical replication), Large Object Logical Replication (LOLOR), and Snowflake Sequences, are now licensed under the permissive PostgreSQL License, which has received approval from the Open Source Initiative. These components are readily accessible on GitHub, having previously been under the PgEdge Community License. This transition eliminates proprietary constraints, fostering wider adoption and encouraging community collaboration.
Enterprise Features and Deployment Options
PgEdge Enterprise Postgres is equipped with a suite of enterprise-grade features, including:
- High availability
- Full support for PostgreSQL versions 16, 17, and the forthcoming version 18
- Enterprise-ready extensions such as pgAudit, pgBackrest, pgBouncer, PostGIS, and pgVector
- Management capabilities via browser and desktop interfaces through pgAdmin
Deployment options are versatile, encompassing native packages for virtual machines and bare metal, containerization for Kubernetes, OpenShift, Docker/Docker Swarm, and managed services through PgEdge Cloud. This flexibility allows organizations to scale seamlessly from a single Postgres instance to high availability configurations featuring read replicas and Patroni, as well as globally distributed deployments across multiple regions, ensuring exceptional uptime and minimal latency.
Phillip Merrick, Co-founder and CEO of PgEdge, articulated the company’s response to market demands: “Customers have asked us to deliver and support enterprise-class Postgres for their non-distributed workloads, and we listened. The market is clear: organizations want fully standard, fully open source Postgres to power their most critical applications. PgEdge is proud to provide enterprise-grade Postgres solutions that scale with our customers’ needs—while reinforcing our long-term commitment to open source and the Postgres community.”
With this launch, PgEdge solidifies its position as a leader within the PostgreSQL ecosystem, offering organizations a scalable and fully open source solution for their mission-critical workloads.
