Windows 11 will soon let you run a network speed test directly from the Taskbar — no third-party tools required

Microsoft is currently developing an innovative feature for Windows 11 that will enable users to conduct network speed tests directly from the Taskbar’s system tray, eliminating the need for third-party applications or external websites. This functionality was initially discovered by the user phantomofearth on X and is currently embedded within the latest preview builds of Windows 11.

Streamlined Network Diagnostics

The new feature manifests as an additional context menu option accessible by right-clicking the network icon in the system tray. Furthermore, a dedicated button in the Wi-Fi quick settings panel serves the same purpose, launching Bing’s integrated network speed test tool in the user’s preferred web browser. This enhancement aims to facilitate swift diagnostics of potential network issues and verify that users are receiving the upload and download speeds they are paying for.

At present, many individuals rely on websites like speedtest.net or various third-party applications to assess their internet speeds. The introduction of this feature promises a more streamlined and user-friendly approach to network testing.

In addition to the network speed test capability, Microsoft is also working on a range of other features for Windows 11. These include a revamped Start menu that offers greater customization, improved natural voice input for the voice access feature, enhancements to mobile device settings, and a new handheld gaming mode designed specifically for Windows-powered handheld devices.

While these features are still undergoing testing, either with Windows Insiders or internally, it is noteworthy that none of them are linked to the upcoming Windows 11 version 25H2. Microsoft has clarified that version 25H2 will maintain the same feature set as version 24H2, indicating that enhancements like the new Start menu will be available for both versions once they are finalized.
