Computers still using Windows 10 operating systems will be removed from the network Oct. 1

WVU Takes Steps to Enhance Data Security

In a decisive move to bolster the security and integrity of its data and services, West Virginia University (WVU) has announced that all computers managed by the institution still operating on the outdated Windows 10 system will be disconnected from the network effective October 1. This initiative is a significant milestone in a comprehensive two-year campaign aimed at encouraging colleges and departments to transition their devices to the more secure Windows 11 platform.

The directive applies universally across all WVU campuses, including those at the Health Sciences Center. Information Technology Services (ITS) has consistently emphasized the importance of updating systems prior to the September 30 deadline. For devices that cannot be upgraded, replacement options have been strongly encouraged.

With Microsoft set to discontinue support for Windows 10 this fall, devices remaining on this operating system will no longer receive essential security updates. This situation poses an unacceptable risk to the university’s network, prompting the need for immediate action.

While the university is committed to maintaining a secure environment, it acknowledges that exemptions to this policy may be necessary in rare cases. Such requests must be submitted without delay, and IT directors are advised to reach out to InfoSec@mail.wvu.edu for assistance.
