A surprise Steam update for Prototype broke the mods making the 16-year old game playable on modern systems—but could hint at a potential remaster

Prototype, a notable entry in the realm of video game sweatshirts, introduced players to a uniquely grumpy protagonist burdened with a mutagenic virus and the angst typical of 2009. One might empathize with his plight—filled with bioweaponry against his will. Yet, the ability to wield grotesque “meat tentacles” that can hurl helicopters into the sky certainly adds a layer of irony to his frustrations. In a world where such powers exist, everyday troubles seem trivial.

Despite its initial success, the Prototype series has not seen any sequels since its last installment, leaving fans to reminisce about the thrill of launching enemies into low earth orbit. However, a recent turn of events has reignited interest in the franchise. Just a day ago, both Prototype and Prototype 2 received unexpected updates on Steam, each approximately 600 MB in size.

Curiously, these updates arrived without any accompanying patch notes or announcements from Steam, leading to speculation about their purpose. For many players, the updates have inadvertently disrupted gameplay, particularly for those relying on mods like PrototypeFix to address compatibility issues on modern systems. The irony is palpable: a surprise update that leaves the game unplayable for its dedicated fanbase.

Yet, amidst the chaos, there are hints suggesting the possibility of a remaster. Dataminers and modders quickly began dissecting the updates, uncovering previously unseen development testing maps. More intriguing, however, are the new names appearing in the credits. Previously, the credits concluded abruptly, but now they include mentions of contributors to a “Ubisoft Connect version,” which, intriguingly, appears to be nonexistent.

New Collaborations and Speculations

Additionally, the updated credits feature staff from Beenox and Demonware, both of which are known as support studios under the Activision umbrella. The most compelling addition comes at the end of the credits: Iron Galaxy Studios, a company renowned for its work in porting and remastering titles such as the Spyro Reignited Trilogy and the Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves collection.

While these updates to a 16-year-old game do not constitute official confirmation of a remaster, the presence of Iron Galaxy in the credits certainly fuels speculation. As the gaming community awaits further developments, the prospect of a Prototype remaster remains an enticing possibility, leaving fans to ponder what the future may hold for this beloved franchise.
