French game developer Motion Twin has taken a decisive step in its creative journey by halting updates for its acclaimed title, Dead Cells. In a recent conversation with PCGamesN, artist and level designer Gwen Massé shared insights into this strategic decision, emphasizing the positive impact it has had on the studio’s focus and future projects.
Shifting Focus to New Horizons
Massé articulated that ceasing updates for Dead Cells was not merely a conclusion but rather a transition into a new era for the studio. “We felt that it was a good thing to stop updates for the game because we felt that we were at the end of an era about Dead Cells,” he explained. This decision allows the team to concentrate fully on their latest endeavor, Windblown, which has become the centerpiece of their current efforts.
With a renewed focus, Motion Twin is channeling its energy into Windblown, a project that has already begun to reshape the studio’s creative landscape. “For us and for the players, it was a good thing to have the game you wanted to make at the beginning. So right now we are really focused on Windblown, focused 100 percent,” Massé stated, highlighting the studio’s commitment to delivering a fresh and ambitious gaming experience.
This shift has proven to be a blessing for Motion Twin, as Massé noted, “Above all, it pushed the studio way beyond what it was doing before and now we can make stuff that is quite ambitious, even technically speaking.” The evolution from Dead Cells, which debuted in 2018, to the upcoming Windblown, which launched into Steam Early Access in October 2024, marks a significant chapter in Motion Twin’s narrative, showcasing their growth and adaptability in the ever-evolving gaming industry.
