Meta has made a significant announcement regarding its Messenger desktop applications, revealing plans to phase out the standalone versions for both Windows and macOS by December 2025. This decision marks a strategic shift in the company’s approach to desktop applications.
Details of the Transition
According to information shared on Meta’s support page, Mac users will have a grace period of 60 days to continue using the Messenger app before it becomes inaccessible. For Windows users, the app will cease to function by December 14, 2025. Notably, both applications have already been removed from their respective app stores, the Microsoft Store and the Mac App Store.
After the shutdown, Windows users will still have the option to communicate via the Facebook app or through the Messenger web version. Conversely, Mac users will need to rely solely on their browsers to access Messenger.
Preserving Your Chat History
For those concerned about their chat history, there is reassurance: messages can remain intact if users enable secure storage and set a PIN prior to transitioning to the web version. This feature ensures that messages are synchronized across devices, and it can be found under Privacy & Safety > End-to-end encrypted chats > Message storage in the settings menu.
Interestingly, users without a Facebook account can still access Messenger by logging in directly at messenger.com.
Streamlining Desktop Applications
This move is part of Meta’s broader initiative to streamline its desktop applications. Reports from The Verge indicate that the company also intends to replace the native WhatsApp Windows app with a web-based version in the near future.
As Meta continues to evolve its offerings, the focus appears to be on enhancing user experience through simplified access and functionality across platforms.
