Brendan Greene’s open-world survival roguelike hikes into early access later this month, and it’ll actually let you save your run through its brutal wilderness

Prologue: Go Wayback!, the ambitious hiking simulation crafted by Brendan Greene’s PlayerUnknown Productions, has been available for exploration in an open beta for the past two and a half months. This phase has allowed eager players to experience Greene’s first major project since the iconic PUBG: Battlegrounds. However, as the beta period draws to a close, anticipation builds for the game’s early access launch set for November 20.

Gameplay Dynamics

At its core, Prologue: Go Wayback presents a seemingly straightforward objective: trek from a cozy cabin nestled in the woods to a distant weather tower. Yet, this journey is anything but simple. The game’s unique maps, generated through the studio’s proprietary machine-learning technology, ensure that each expedition is distinct, filled with unpredictable challenges.

Players quickly discover that the rugged terrain and unpredictable weather can turn a casual hike into a perilous endeavor. During my encounter with the alpha version earlier this year, I found myself grappling with the elements, often succumbing to the harsh conditions within mere yards of my starting point. Elie Gould echoed this sentiment, labeling it one of the most challenging survival games encountered to date.

Upcoming Features in Early Access

Throughout the year, PlayerUnknown Productions has diligently refined Prologue, enhancing its weather systems and introducing essential survival tools such as binoculars, lighters, and matchbooks. The forthcoming early access version promises to elevate the experience further with the inclusion of two new game modes:

  • Objective: Survive – This mode strips away the journey aspect, focusing solely on the challenge of survival.
  • Free Roam – In this mode, players can explore the serene forest environment without the threat of hazards.

Additionally, players can look forward to a map editor, enabling them to craft their own challenges, alongside a map seed sharing feature to showcase favorite maps with the community. A noteworthy enhancement is the introduction of a mid-run save option, a feature that has proven complex due to the nature of the machine-learning systems employed. PlayerUnknown Productions has acknowledged the challenges faced in implementing this feature, stating, “Saving has been trickier than you’d think, as our guided generation system means things don’t end up at the same place every time.” Final testing is underway to ensure a smooth rollout with the early access launch.

A Vision for the Future

The reception of Prologue will be closely monitored, as it marks a pivotal moment in Greene’s ambitious 10-year vision to create a platform capable of supporting expansive, planet-sized games. While some may refer to this vision as a Metaverse, Greene himself prefers to steer clear of that terminology, focusing instead on the creative possibilities that lie ahead.
