Google Photos hops on the viral video train with these new templates

What you need to know

  • Google has unveiled an exciting update for the Photos app, introducing “video creation templates” for users.
  • These templates can be accessed while creating a Highlight video, offering a pre-made video format complete with music, text, and beat-matching.
  • Users have the option to allow AI to automatically select suitable content from their camera roll or take a hands-on approach to manually curate and edit their videos.
  • YouTube Shorts has also embraced this trend, launching its own version of templates to facilitate content creation.

In a bid to infuse creativity into video sharing, Google has announced an update to its Photos app, set to roll out on Android devices. This enhancement introduces “video creation templates,” designed to be both intuitive and user-friendly. Google describes these templates as “trendy,” featuring automation and “smart media selection” to help users choose the most captivating shots from their camera rolls.

The process to create a “Highlight Video” is straightforward. Users can navigate to Google Photos > Create > Highlight Video to begin. Here, they will discover a variety of pre-made templates that come equipped with music, text, and synchronized beats. Once a template is selected, users can either let Google’s AI assist in selecting photos or opt for a more personalized touch by manually choosing their images. The manual selection process allows users to utilize the Photos’ Search feature, entering names, dates, or locations to find the perfect shots.

Once the initial video is generated, users can unleash their creativity during the editing phase. They can swap out music tracks, reorder clips, or remove any elements they wish. While the new templates have not yet reached all users, a wider rollout is anticipated soon.

Celebrating its 10th anniversary earlier this summer, Google Photos continues to evolve, incorporating innovative features to enhance user experience. In September, the app integrated Veo 3’s image-to-video generation technology, allowing users to craft high-quality, six-second clips from their own images. This functionality is accessible through the Create tab, which now offers a suite of tools alongside the Veo 3 model.

In a parallel move, YouTube has also embraced the template trend, enhancing its Shorts feature. Content creators can now utilize a “template” button while viewing videos, making it easier to incorporate trending music or sound clips into their own creations. YouTube is reportedly expanding this feature to allow users to compile multiple clips into their videos, further streamlining the creative process.
