Google is cracking down on apps that secretly drain your battery

Google has taken significant steps to enhance the user experience on Android devices by introducing new app quality guidelines aimed at mitigating excessive battery drain. This initiative, set to take effect on March 1, 2026, will hold developers accountable for apps that unnecessarily tax a device’s battery life.

New Performance Checks for Developers

As part of its ongoing commitment to technical excellence, Google is implementing performance checks that specifically target a behavior known as “wake locks.” These wake locks are essential for keeping a phone operational during activities like music playback or file downloads. However, when mismanaged by developers, they can lead to rapid battery depletion.

Under the new policy, apps that are found to excessively hold wake locks—essentially preventing a phone from entering sleep mode without justifiable reasons—will face penalties within the Play Store. Such apps may not only lose their visibility in recommendations but will also be marked with a warning label, alerting users to potential battery drain issues.

This move builds upon Google’s existing framework of “core technical quality metrics,” which already monitors app crashes and unresponsive behavior. With the addition of battery efficiency as a critical quality factor, Google aims to encourage developers to create smarter, more power-efficient applications.

For instance, an app will be flagged for excessive battery drain if it keeps the device awake for over two cumulative hours within a 24-hour timeframe without valid justification. In the case of wearable devices, an app that consumes more than 4.44% of the battery per hour during active sessions will also be scrutinized. Apps that exceed these thresholds risk diminished visibility on the Play Store and may carry a public warning regarding their battery usage.

In developing this new battery metric, Google collaborated closely with Samsung, reflecting a commitment to enhancing user satisfaction through improved app performance and transparency. This initiative not only aims to protect users from battery-hungry applications but also fosters a more responsible approach to app development in the Android ecosystem.
