For the first time since 2012, we’re getting a new Silent Hill, Fatal Frame and Resident Evil within the same six months

In a nostalgic nod to the early 2000s, Koei Tecmo has reignited the flames of Japanese horror with the announcement of the Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, set to launch on March 12, 2026. This revival comes at a time when fans of the genre are eager to revisit the chilling atmospheres that once defined their gaming experiences. The announcement was made during a Japan-focused State of Play, stirring excitement among those who fondly recall the era when titles like Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and Fatal Frame dominated the horror landscape.

Reviving a Classic

Since the mid-2000s, the horror genre has seen a significant evolution, with many beloved franchises taking a backseat to spin-offs or lengthy silences. The last notable year for releases from this trio was 2012, when Resident Evil 6, Silent Hill: Downpour, and the Wii-exclusive remake of Fatal Frame 2 all launched within six months of each other. This upcoming remake promises to deliver a fresh experience while honoring the original’s spine-tingling essence.

Shibata, a key figure in the game’s development, shared insights into the gameplay mechanics that have been preserved and enhanced. “The tension from the game from waiting for the ghosts to get closer and closer, then taking the photo at the last second,” he explained. “We have preserved this aspect while introducing new elements such as zooming and focusing as if you’re operating an actual camera.”

In addition to these mechanics, players can expect a variety of filters that mimic real-life camera effects. Shibata noted that these filters will “affect what you see,” encouraging players to experiment with them for potential advantages in both combat and exploration. For those who remember the haunting presence of the ‘Woman in Box,’ the prospect of new ways to perceive her is both thrilling and unnerving.

The Steam page describes the Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake as a “complete overhaul” of the 2003 classic, which follows the harrowing journey of twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they navigate the eerie Minakami Village. Armed with the Camera Obscura, the sisters must confront the vengeful spirits that haunt their surroundings, unearthing otherworldly secrets along the way.

As anticipation builds for the release, many gamers find themselves juggling multiple titles, including the recently revisited Silent Hill f and the impending Resident Evil Requiem. The addition of this remake to the lineup only adds to the excitement, ensuring that horror enthusiasts have plenty to look forward to in the coming months.
