The latest update for Space Engineers 2 has arrived, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of this highly anticipated sequel. Until now, the early-access alpha version has primarily served as a creative sandbox, allowing players to experiment within its expansive universe. However, the transformative Vertical Slice 2 (VS2) update promises to enhance the survival experience, taking the game to new heights.
Exploring the Almagest Star System
According to Marek Rosa, the founder of Keen Software House, the VS2 update introduces “the first full implementation of planets,” establishing the foundational systems for survival, colonization, and progression. Central to this update is the Almagest star system, which invites players to venture beyond the confines of the Concordia Research Facility into a “vast and unexplored” frontier.
At the heart of this new celestial realm lies a brown dwarf star named Delfos, with the Almagest star illuminating the surroundings. Players can now explore the planets Verdure and Kemik, where they will encounter diverse biomes, intricate cave systems, and a variety of natural phenomena, including destructible elements that enhance the immersive experience.
Survival Mode and Building Innovations
The introduction of survival mode comes with an engaging storyline presented through a cutscene and voiceover. Players will navigate base contract systems, chart their interactive maps of the star system, and establish station points for efficient fast travel. While the initial progression offers a glimpse into the survival mechanics, the standout feature is the innovative building system.
Players can now craft basic components from natural resources found in their backpacks, but the true innovation lies in projection building. This feature allows users to create holographic designs without committing resources, enabling them to refine their constructions before finalizing their investments. This approach makes building in survival mode feel more intuitive and accessible, akin to the creative mode experience.
A Wealth of New Tools and Systems
The VS2 update also introduces a comprehensive suite of production systems, including a grid power system with interchangeable batteries, various consumables, and tools for ore detection and drilling. Keen Software House has expanded the toolkit available to players, featuring welders, grinders, drills, fabricators, smelters, gear forges, thrusters, hydrogen tanks, generators, barrels, reactors, solar panels, and a conveyor system, among others.
The Space Engineers 2 VS2 update is set to launch on Monday, December 1, and is currently available at a 20% discount, priced at .99 / £19.99 until December 8. For those eager to dive into this new chapter, further details can be found on the official website.
Rosa has indicated that additional features, including wheels, weapons, and mechanical blocks, require further refinement before their release. Players can look forward to these enhancements, alongside a full GPS system, new contract types, area welding, and block wrappers, in the upcoming VS2.2 ‘Survival Extensions.’ The updated roadmap is accessible on the SE2 website, providing insights into future developments.
