Wreckreation developer puts its entire staff on notice as publisher THQ Nordic abandons it: ‘We simply cannot sustain the studio in its current form’

Three Fields Entertainment, known for its titles such as Dangerous Golf and Danger Zone, has recently announced a significant shift in its operations. The studio, which has also ventured into the ambitious realm of racing with Wreckreation, has placed its entire staff on notice of redundancy. This decision comes as the company faces a challenging financial landscape, stating that it “will not see revenue from game sales for the foreseeable future.”

Challenges and Changes

In a candid statement shared on X, CEO Fiona Sperry elaborated on the studio’s predicament. She revealed that the team has had to self-fund most of the year, including all post-launch content, following a decline in support from their publisher, THQ Nordic, a subsidiary of the Embracer Group. The lack of enthusiasm and financial backing from the publisher has left Three Fields unable to sustain its current operations.

Despite the studio’s efforts, Wreckreation has not performed as well as hoped. While it attempted to merge the exhilarating elements of Burnout with the creative circuit-building of Trackmania, the reception has been mixed. Some players appreciated the innovative blend of racing styles, yet others pointed out flaws in car handling and AI performance.

Sperry expressed disappointment over the studio’s inability to fully realize its ambitious vision for Wreckreation. “We have so many things in the pipeline—multiple features, updates, and creative ideas that we were excited to bring to the game,” she noted. To illustrate the studio’s ongoing efforts, she shared a video showcasing their work, hoping it might attract potential investors.

A Glimmer of Hope

While the outlook may seem bleak, Sperry remains optimistic. She hopes that by publicly sharing their progress, someone might recognize the potential within Three Fields and offer the support needed to navigate these turbulent times. “My hope is that by showing this work publicly, someone out there might also see that potential and perhaps an opportunity could still emerge,” she stated.

Regardless of the studio’s future, Sperry assured fans that they would ensure the next update, which includes a highly anticipated crossplay feature, will be released before Christmas. “We hope you and your friends can enjoy it,” she concluded, reflecting the passion and dedication of her small but talented team.
