AMD has recently initiated a soft launch of its latest graphics technology suite, FSR Redstone, which promises to enhance gaming performance significantly. This development comes with the exciting news that the number of games supporting the flagship machine-learning upscaling technology, FSR4, has surged to over 200 in just three months. Additionally, AMD is introducing ML-based frame generation for more than 30 titles, both of which aim to elevate framerates while maintaining superior image quality compared to previous iterations of FSR.
However, the transition to FSR Redstone has introduced some complexities. Originally anticipated for release in the latter half of this year, AMD has opted to integrate FSR4 into the broader Redstone framework. Consequently, FSR4 is now branded as “AMD FSR Upscaling,” with Redstone serving as the umbrella term for the current suite of machine-learning products. This shift may stem from the limited showcase of FSR Ray Regeneration, which is currently only featured in Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, released last month, and the absence of games utilizing FSR Radiance Caching, which is set to be available for developers in 2026.
For gamers eager to leverage these advancements, it’s important to note that FSR Redstone and FSR4 features are exclusive to Radeon RX 9000-series cards. Users will need to navigate to the AMD Software application to activate “AMD FSR Upscaling” and “AMD FSR Frame Generation” under the Gaming > Graphics tab. Additionally, enabling AMD FSR 3.1 or 4 within individual games is necessary, as these advanced machine-learning techniques require activation on a per-game basis.
Despite the promising technology, the adoption of AMD’s latest graphics cards has been somewhat sluggish. The Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT have yet to make a significant impact on the Steam Hardware Survey, indicating that less than 0.15 percent of PC gamers currently utilize them. However, there is a glimmer of hope as the Radeon RX 9070 and 9070 XT are now available at their original MSRP, which could potentially boost their market presence. These cards have garnered positive reviews for their performance, suggesting they offer good value for money.
