In a series of posts, Meta announced that the desktop version of Messenger would no longer be operational. Users were given a 60-day notice to transition away from the app, after which access would be blocked entirely. The company encouraged users to uninstall the app, stating, “We encourage you to delete the app since it will no longer be usable.”

While the posts regarding the app’s discontinuation were not dated, reports from TechCrunch and other sources indicate that the app became unavailable as of Monday. Attempts to download the app on Windows now redirect users to the Messenger or Facebook websites. Notably, Meta has not provided a public explanation for the decision to discontinue the desktop application.

This change primarily affects users who relied on the dedicated desktop application. Those who accessed Messenger through web browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari will continue to have access to the chat service. Former desktop app users will now be directed to use the web version of Messenger, while still retaining access on their mobile devices.

Meta assures users that their conversations will remain intact and accessible via Facebook.com or Messenger.com, as well as through the mobile app, provided they have taken specific steps prior to the app’s deactivation. Users needed to enable secure storage within the Messenger app and set up a PIN while still using the desktop version to save their chat history. Upon logging into the web version, they will be prompted to enter this PIN. Additionally, individuals with Messenger accounts who do not have Facebook accounts can still log in directly to Messenger.com without needing to create a Facebook profile.
