After 6 hours, Crimson Desert is one of the most overwhelming, chaotic, madcap videogames I’ve ever played—and I’m hungry for more

This week I’ve been: Getting stuck into World of Warcraft: Midnight. Last week I was: Playing Crimson Desert, and I’m eager to share my thoughts on this exhilarating experience.

Crimson Desert marks a significant venture for Pearl Abyss, the creators of Black Desert Online, as it represents their first serious foray into single-player gaming. The game blends action with light RPG elements, reminiscent of recent Legend of Zelda titles, all while introducing a skill tree that invites players to explore various combat styles.

During a recent event, I found myself engrossed in the combat mechanics, which allow for a unique playstyle. A fellow journalist observed my distinct approach, where I seamlessly transitioned from a three-strike heavy attack into a palm strike combo, effectively keeping my opponent stunlocked. This culminated in a jumping double-kick that delivered a satisfying blow.

Kliff, the protagonist, boasts a skill tree brimming with options, from archery and unarmed combat to swordplay and grappling maneuvers. Players can even unlock abilities that allow Kliff to swing off objects like a superhero, culminating in a Sonic the Hedgehog-style attack. The combat is dynamic; Kliff can parry, grapple, and execute a series of impressive moves that include a meteor strike and a belly flop onto enemies.

However, the challenge lies in the fact that Kliff’s opponents are equally formidable, employing a variety of tactics to counter his attacks. The frenetic pace of combat can feel overwhelming, yet it invites players to embrace the chaos, much like the experience of playing Dragon’s Dogma 2. As I immersed myself in the gameplay, I found joy in the sandbox nature of the combat, where the goal shifted from efficiency to creativity in dispatching foes.

The game’s ambition is evident, as it introduces multiple playable characters, including Damiane and Oongka, each with unique abilities that enhance the gameplay experience. Damiane, a gunslinger and fencer, can summon spears of light and throw her shield with precision. Oongka, on the other hand, wields a massive axe and features a grappling-based parry that allows for spectacular takedowns.

I felt like how I imagine an overexcited puppy must feel when wrestling with a fellow dog in the mud.

Despite the exhilarating gameplay, Crimson Desert does present a crowded control scheme that may lead to mis-inputs, reminiscent of complex fighting games. The learning curve is steep, but the potential for absurd and entertaining moments keeps players engaged.

Everywhere, Videogame, All At Once

As my preview session progressed, I was granted access to various saves, including a dragon mount and a flying mech. The sheer scale of the game is impressive, with numerous objectives and side quests waiting to be discovered. My initial four-hour playthrough focused on a single town, yet I barely scratched the surface of the content available.

The game’s ambition extends beyond combat, incorporating elements from various genres. Players can engage in cooking reminiscent of Breath of the Wild, gather resources, and partake in a plethora of minigames. The breadth of activities is staggering, from bounty hunts to fishing, and even managing faction reputations.

However, the question remains: will Crimson Desert be able to sustain its ambitious scope without collapsing under its own weight? My experience thus far has been enjoyable, but the looming complexity raises concerns. It feels as if every idea has been meticulously crafted into a full-fledged mechanic, resulting in a game that is both charming and overwhelming.

What stands out is the sincerity of the game’s absurdity. The narrative is filled with quirky characters and scenarios that fit seamlessly into the chaotic world. Kliff navigates through bizarre encounters with ease, and the game’s whimsical tone adds to its charm.

In essence, Crimson Desert appears to be a product of unrestrained creativity, designed to elicit excitement and joy. While the full experience remains to be seen, my initial impressions suggest a thrilling journey awaits, one that invites players to embrace the chaos and revel in the adventure.
