A State of Decay 3 playtest is finally happening, after almost two years of radio silence

Undead Labs has officially announced the arrival of a much-anticipated playtest for State of Decay 3, reigniting excitement among fans. Originally unveiled in 2020, the game has seen a lengthy silence, making this news particularly welcome. The developer is set to initiate a technical alpha, marking the first step toward delivering the game to players and refining it ahead of its full release.

Community-Centric Development

The State of Decay series has long captivated audiences with its unique approach to survival gameplay. Unlike many titles that center on a single protagonist, players are tasked with cultivating a community of survivors, leveraging their diverse strengths to enhance their town’s prosperity. The looming threat of permadeath adds a layer of tension, ensuring that every choice carries weight, while the distinct personalities of each character deepen the emotional stakes of the game. The commitment to long-term support has been a hallmark of the series, with State of Decay 2 receiving its final update in October 2024, following an impressive 38 patches over six years.

In a recent blog post, the developers expressed gratitude for the patience of their community, stating, “You’ve all been super patient, and we hope you’re as excited as we are that the moment has arrived to start sharing State of Decay 3 with you.” They clarified that the initial wave of playtests will be limited, but assured fans that more opportunities will arise throughout the year.

β€œ’Community is Survival’ isn’t just a tagline, a gameplay mechanic, or a strategy,” the developers emphasized. β€œIt’s our mindset. Over the years, the State of Decay community has had so much influence on updates, mechanics, and features that make the game we all love come alive. So it’s only right we kick off State of Decay 3 with a good old-fashioned community playtest.”

What to Expect in the Playtest

The upcoming playtest promises an engaging experience, featuring four-player co-op gameplay, innovative base-building mechanics, resource management strategies, and intense combat scenarios. Brant Fitzgerald, series co-creator, noted that while much of the team has focused on updates for State of Decay 2, others have been dedicated to crafting exciting new elements for the third installment.

Players can now sign up for the State of Decay 3 playtest, scheduled to begin in May. Interested participants are encouraged to visit the official website to register. To qualify, players must connect their email and Discord accounts and complete a brief questionnaire. Undead Labs has emphasized that slots are limited, and only those who submit the survey will be considered for selection.

The technical alpha will feature multiple testing windows, providing additional chances for players to join if they are not selected in the initial round. Once registered, participants will also have the option to refer a friend, although details on whether this will enhance their chances of being chosen remain unclear.
