In a recent announcement, Microsoft has confirmed that eligible Windows 11 PCs currently operating on the 24H2 version will soon be upgraded to the 25H2 edition. This transition is automatic, requiring no action from users, although there is an option to postpone the update temporarily. However, complete prevention of the update is not possible.
To assess eligibility for the update, Microsoft employs machine learning techniques. This sophisticated approach combines various factors, including testing results, user feedback, partner responses, diagnostic data, and insights from real-world usage. The aim is to target PCs that are least likely to encounter compatibility issues during the update process. Those systems that may face potential problems will be placed on a waitlist until any issues are resolved.
Required for security reasons
The primary impetus behind this update is security. With support for Windows 11 24H2 set to expire on October 13, users will no longer receive security patches for that version. Microsoft is keen to ensure that all Windows 11 devices are operating on a supported edition to continue receiving the latest security updates.
This mandatory update specifically affects individual users running Windows 11 Home or Pro editions. Computers managed by IT departments in organizational settings are excluded from this automatic rollout, as those updates are typically handled by IT professionals.
To check if your PC qualifies for the upgrade, navigate to Settings, select Windows Update, and click on the option to check for updates. If your system is eligible and still running on Windows 11 24H2, the 25H2 update will be automatically downloaded and installed. However, since this is an automatic process, users will eventually receive the update without needing to manually check.
If you wish to delay the update, you can do so by going to Settings, selecting Windows Update, and clicking the down arrow next to the menu for Pause updates. This allows you to pause the update for one, two, or three weeks, but it merely postpones the inevitable.
Any reason to avoid the 25H2 update?
Is there any compelling reason to avoid the 25H2 update? For eligible users, the answer appears to be no. While Microsoft has faced criticism in the past regarding the reliability of its updates—particularly with the 24H2 version, which was plagued by numerous bugs—the 25H2 update has been designed with improvements in mind.
The 2025 update is notably more compact and installs more swiftly than its predecessors. This efficiency is achieved by updating only the necessary files rather than replacing the entire system files. Additionally, both Windows 11 25H2 and 24H2 share the same code base, contributing to the stability and reliability of the new version compared to its predecessor, which took considerable time to resolve many of its issues.
To verify which version of Windows 11 you are currently using, simply go to Settings, select System, and click on About. The Windows specifications section will display the version line, indicating which annual update is installed on your system.
