1000xResist developer added a video sequence ‘out of desperation’ but now they’re bringing FMV back for their next game

Innovative Storytelling in Gaming

As players delve into the immersive world of 1000xResist, they find themselves navigating through a series of chapters that introduce fresh perspectives and mechanics. However, the transition to video footage, particularly the striking visuals of Hong Kong, can be a jarring experience. Creative director Remy Siu candidly shares that this unexpected shift was born “really out of desperation.” The studio behind the game, Sunset Visitor, is composed of artists who have a rich background in performance, and it was a stroke of luck that Siu had relevant footage from a documentary project that seamlessly filled a narrative gap in his game. “It’s like, oh, let me reach into my archives and see what I have,” he reflects.

At its core, 1000xResist explores the complex theme of convincing an AI of its own humanity. The team recognized the potential of full-motion video (FMV) as a compelling storytelling tool. “We feel comfortable doing lots of voiceover because that’s where we think we can make an interesting contribution,” Siu explains. Their focus on narrative-driven games stems from a belief that this is where they can truly innovate. The integration of FMV is an avenue they are eager to explore further.

In the broader landscape of gaming, the resurgence of FMV is noteworthy. Titles like Her Story and the influx of Asian dating sims on platforms like Steam demonstrate the diverse storytelling possibilities that arise when actors step in front of the camera. As Tony Howard-Arias from Black Tabby Games observes, “There’s a lot of exciting movement in that direction right now.” He points to recent successes such as Road to Empress, a Chinese choice-driven FMV game that dramatizes the life of a historical empress with impressive production values.

Despite its revival, FMV remains a niche within the narrative gaming genre. Siu notes, “It’s something that as a genre, I do think we get to jump in there and put our own little stamp on it.” The unique science fiction premise of 1000xResist lends itself well to the juxtaposition of the physical and virtual realms, making the use of FMV a fitting choice.

As anticipation builds, Prove You’re Human, another title leveraging this innovative storytelling approach, is set to launch on Steam, promising to further enrich the narrative landscape of video games.
