Microsoft has announced the impending retirement of its Outlook Lite Android app, set for May 25, 2026, as detailed in a recent update on the Microsoft 365 Admin Center. This decision follows the app’s removal from the Google Play Store, which took place on October 6, 2025. In light of this transition, the tech giant is directing Android users toward its primary Outlook mobile app.
Outlook Lite’s Journey
Launched in 2022, Outlook Lite was specifically crafted for users in emerging markets, catering to devices with just 1GB of RAM and operating on slower 2G and 3G networks. The app distinguished itself by utilizing less storage and being more power-efficient than its main counterpart. Additionally, it offered integration with SMS messages, enhancing communication for its target audience.
However, Microsoft has indicated that the retirement of Outlook Lite is part of a broader strategy aimed at minimizing redundancy and concentrating development efforts on Microsoft Outlook Mobile, which serves as the company’s primary mobile email platform. Notably, Outlook Lite lacked integration with cloud services and Microsoft’s Copilot AI, and it did not support essential enterprise features such as Data Loss Prevention (DLP).
Transitioning to Outlook Mobile
For those still utilizing Outlook Lite, an Upgrade option will be available, guiding users through the installation process of the main Outlook Mobile app. This primary app, similar to its Windows version, is ad-supported. Users seeking an ad-free experience will need to subscribe to a Microsoft 365 Personal or Home plan.
