Marathon’s most popular shotgun is getting nerfed a second time, as Bungie worries it is ‘eclipsing a lot of the other short range options that exist in the game’

Since the launch of Marathon, one weapon has captured the attention of players and analysts alike: the formidable WSTR shotgun. While the Biotoxic Disinjector boasts impressive power, its rarity confines it to the Cryo Archive. In contrast, the WSTR has established itself as the go-to choice for adventurers navigating the terrain of Tau Ceti IV.

Weapon Dynamics and Game Balance

The WSTR shotgun, often referred to as Marathon’s “double-barrelled delete key,” has already undergone a significant nerf, which curtailed its range and rendered it less effective in long-distance encounters. Nevertheless, it remains the top contender for close-quarters combat, particularly in scenarios where players can spot the decals beneath an enemy runner’s eyes. A recent Steam post highlighted this dominance, stating, “Right now, it’s become a dominant option and is eclipsing a lot of the other short-range options that exist in the game.”

In response to this overwhelming popularity, a forthcoming update on Tuesday will adjust the WSTR’s capabilities. Players equipped with blue shields (or higher) will no longer be taken down in just two shots, a change aimed at fostering more tactical counterplay. Ziegler, a key figure in the game’s development, elaborated on this decision: “The ideal is that in the majority of cases this will force a reload in scenarios where the target has a blue shield.” However, the WSTR will still maintain its ability to down players with green shields in two shots, ensuring it remains a potent option for those exploring earlier maps.

This adjustment appears to strike a balance between maintaining the weapon’s allure for new players while encouraging adaptability as they progress through the game. Bungie’s willingness to make bold changes to Marathon’s meta has been refreshing, and the game’s evolution is a captivating spectacle. The ongoing sponsored kits experiment, which limits all players to a free loadout, has introduced a carefree extraction experience that many have found enjoyable.

Additionally, the recently introduced Mercy Kits, intended to revive downed rivals, have taken an unexpected turn, often resulting in players using them to eliminate opponents instead. Such developments encapsulate the unpredictable nature of Marathon, making it a dynamic and engaging experience for all involved.
