Ubisoft cancels Animal Crossing and Minecraft-inspired cosy life sim game Alterra

Ubisoft’s Project Alterra Canceled Amidst Ongoing Restructuring

As anticipation builds for the unveiling of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced tomorrow, Ubisoft finds itself navigating a turbulent phase marked by project cancellations. Following the high-profile discontinuation of the Sands of Time remake, the company has now pulled the plug on another original endeavor.

Whispers of Alterra first surfaced in late 2024, when it was characterized as an “Animal Crossing-inspired social sim” infused with elements reminiscent of Minecraft. However, on April 21st, Insider Gaming, the outlet that initially reported on the game, disclosed that the project has been officially shelved.

According to sources, the news reached the development team on Tuesday, leading to an unexpected early dismissal for staff. While the report indicated that no layoffs were imminent as a result of the cancellation, it remains uncertain how this decision will impact the support studios that had been collaborating on the title. Employees involved in the project have been placed on availability for other assignments within the company.

Developed by Ubisoft Montréal for nearly three years, Alterra was under the creative guidance of industry veterans, including creative director Patrick Redding, known for his work on Splinter Cell and Far Cry, and lead producer Fabien Lhéraud.

In response to inquiries from IGN, Ubisoft refrained from commenting directly on the fate of Alterra. However, a spokesperson provided insight into the company’s broader strategy: “As part of our portfolio management approach and evolving creative house-led model, we continuously assess projects at every stage of development to ensure alignment with our strategic priorities, quality ambitions, and long-term market potential. Projects that no longer meet these expectations may be discontinued.”
