In a concerning development for Verizon customers, a sophisticated scam has emerged that exploits the official My Verizon app to deliver fraudulent push notifications. This alarming tactic has already ensnared at least one user, who narrowly avoided a significant financial loss and potential identity theft.
How the Scam Unfolded
A Reddit user, known as ApprehensivePace2969, shared their unsettling experience, which began with a phone call from an individual impersonating a Verizon representative. The caller claimed the victim qualified for a remarkable 65% discount and a complimentary iPad. The authenticity of the offer was bolstered by a push notification from the My Verizon app, leading the victim to let their guard down.
Shortly after, a brand-new 256GB iPad Pro, valued at ,500, arrived at the victim’s doorstep. Although they were charged a shipping fee of 6, they were reassured that this amount would be refunded upon activation of the device. However, the situation took a turn when the victim received additional calls from another supposed Verizon representative, who claimed that the wrong device had been sent. The new directive was clear: return the iPad Pro immediately or face a full charge for the device.
The Red Flags
Upon closer inspection, the victim noticed several red flags. The return shipping label was not from Verizon’s official returns center but was instead addressed to a “Jordan Belfort” at an unrelated New York address. This peculiar detail raised suspicions, as it seemed more like a prank than a legitimate return process. Furthermore, the scammers instructed the victim to drop off the package at a specific UPS store, indicating they had prior knowledge of the victim’s location.
Fortunately, the victim remained vigilant and did not succumb to the pressure. Instead, they took the iPad Pro to a nearby Verizon store, where they contacted the genuine fraud department. The device was returned, and the shipping fee was refunded, averting what could have been a costly mistake.
As this incident highlights, the integration of such scams with legitimate applications poses a serious threat to consumer security. Android Authority has reached out to Verizon for a statement regarding this issue and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
