Microsoft has unveiled its optional April update for Windows 11, introducing a suite of new features that promise to enhance user experience. This update, designated as KB5083631, was initially accessible through the Release Preview Channel and is set to roll out to all users with the upcoming Patch Tuesday update next month.

Key Features of the April Update

Among the highlights of this update are:

  • Xbox Mode: Formerly known as the Xbox Full Screen Experience (FSE), this mode provides a console-like interface designed to simplify access to PC games. Users can activate it via the Xbox app, Game Bar settings, or by pressing the Windows logo key + F11.
  • AI Agents on Taskbar: Windows 11 users can now keep tabs on AI agents, including the Microsoft 365 Researcher agent, directly from the taskbar. This feature is accessible by hovering over the Microsoft 365 Copilot icon.
  • File Explorer Improvements: The File Explorer app has expanded its capabilities to support additional archive formats, including uu, cpio, xar, and NuGet Packages (nupkg).
  • New Haptic Feedback Effects: For users equipped with a Surface Slim Pen 2, ASUS Pen 3.0, or MSI pen 2, new haptic feedback effects can be enabled in the settings. These effects enhance interactions such as aligning objects in PowerPoint and resizing windows.
  • Touch Keyboard Improvements: The touch keyboard’s voice typing feature has undergone a redesign, eliminating the full-screen overlay and allowing voice typing animations to appear directly on the dictation key.
  • Drop Tray: The previously named Drag Tray has been rebranded as the Drop Tray, now featuring a more compact peek view. Its settings have been relocated from Nearby sharing to Settings > System > Multitasking.
  • Microsoft Store Enhancements: This update aims to minimize unexpected errors (0x80070057, 0x80240008, and 0x80073d28) that users may encounter when downloading and installing applications.

In addition to the April update, Microsoft has also released the optional KB5083806 update for Windows 11 version 26H1. This update is specifically tailored for new ARM-powered devices anticipated to launch later this year, which may include the refreshed Surface Pro and Surface Laptop lineup, expected to debut in two separate waves.
