Android Auto app widgets mirror mobile setup, leak shows as release nears

In the ever-evolving landscape of automotive technology, Android Auto is preparing for a significant update with the introduction of its widget selection feature. This development, which has surfaced in various leaks leading up to the launch, signals a new chapter for the platform.

The latest iteration, codenamed “Gemini,” aims to enhance the user experience, despite some initial resistance. Google is diligently working on refining Android Auto, as evidenced by recent leaks that showcase upcoming changes.

Originally referred to as the “Earth” project, this unreleased version of Android Auto has been aptly renamed to reflect its core functionality—integrating widgets into the driving experience. According to Android Authority, the “car widgets” menu is now accessible in Android Auto version 16.8.161804-release.daily. Upon selection, users will find a menu that closely resembles the familiar home screen widget selection found on Android devices.

The newly designed menu features both a highlighted section and a browsing option, complete with a search bar to streamline navigation. Among the simple app options showcased in the leaked images are Calendar, Chrome, Google Drive, and even ChatGPT. Given that Android Auto serves as an extension of mobile devices, it is only logical that widgets tailored for the Pixel and other smartphones maintain a similar aesthetic on the car dashboard.

However, it is worth noting that Google may impose certain limitations on how specific widgets function within the dashboard environment to ensure optimal display and usability. As of now, the full scope of this feature remains somewhat ambiguous.

As is typical with features emerging from unreleased app versions, there is currently no timeline for the official announcement of this widget functionality. However, the significance of Android Auto widgets suggests that a rollout could be imminent. With Google I/O on the horizon, there is a strong possibility that this feature will be highlighted among new announcements related to Android’s broader ecosystem.
