Microsoft is currently rolling out a significant update to the Windows 11 Run menu, targeting users in the Experimental Channel. This refreshed interface promises a more modern look and enhanced functionality, including improved speed and support for dark mode. The company has recognized the need for this update, aiming to streamline user experience and efficiency.
In a recent blog post, Microsoft explained the rationale behind the changes. Notably, the familiar “Browse” button, which provided a shortcut to user files, has been removed due to its minimal usage. In its place, users will find a new command, “~,” which directs them straight to their user directory, enhancing accessibility.
The new Run menu has been developed using code from the Command Palette, a feature available through PowerToys. This utility allows users to execute commands, open websites, and search for files swiftly. Windows 11 Insiders can activate the updated Run menu by navigating to Settings > System > Advanced and toggling the option on. An early version of this redesign began appearing in preview builds last year, indicating Microsoft’s commitment to iterative improvement.
Microsoft’s blog highlighted the collaborative efforts made with partners across the platform to ensure that the new UI surfaces load quickly. “Improvements we’ve made to the platform don’t just make Run fast, but they help make the whole OS more efficient,” the post noted, underscoring the broader impact of this update on overall system performance.
