Subnautica 2: The Debate Over Combat Mechanics

The recent discussions surrounding Subnautica 2 have sparked considerable interest, focusing primarily on a singular question: should players have the ability to engage in combat with the game’s aquatic adversaries? Many players have expressed a desire for a means to defend themselves against hostile sea creatures such as Nibbler Mangos and Hammerheads. They reminisce about the original Subnautica, where a survival knife allowed players to fend off aggressive marine life, including formidable leviathans.

However, the developers have firmly stated their stance: Subnautica 2 is “not a killing game.” They have encouraged players seeking combat to explore other titles, emphasizing their vision for a more peaceful gaming experience. This decision has led to mixed reactions within the community, as some players respect the developers’ creative direction while others feel a sense of loss over the absence of combat options.

In response to this demand, modder jibotron has introduced the “Killable Creatures” mod, which does not provide traditional weapons but instead enhances existing tools to enable players to defend themselves against oceanic nuisances. Jibotron expressed frustration upon discovering the removal of combat features, questioning the rationale behind such a decision in a sandbox survival game. Drawing from previous modding experience, jibotron decided to create a solution that aligns with the desires of players who miss the ability to fight back.

With the mod installed, players can utilize the survival multitool, which now inflicts 20 damage, or the sonic resonator, capable of delivering 50 damage to various creatures. This allows players to eliminate many of the pesky inhabitants of the ocean, leaving them to float lifelessly in the water. While testing the mod, I found that it does function as intended, though I lean towards supporting the developers’ vision of the game. The existing tools, such as the sonic resonator, already provide a means to deter Nibbler Mangos without the need for traditional weaponry.

Chasing down these creatures for a kill can become more tedious than rewarding, as they tend to flee quickly after taking damage. I discovered that the effort required to track them down for additional sonic blasts can detract from the overall enjoyment of the game. Yet, I must admit there is a certain satisfaction in dispatching these blue nuisances, especially considering their tendency to startle unsuspecting players.

My experimentation also led me to confront a Hammerhead, known for its relentless headbutting of stationary vehicles, and even a Coral Crab, which I regrettably took down despite its non-aggressive nature. The prospect of battling leviathans remains untested, as I anticipate that such an endeavor would be both time-consuming and challenging. Nevertheless, I am confident that some players will rise to the occasion.

Smaller fish, typically caught for sustenance, can also be eliminated, although their remains do not yield any resources, which is a missed opportunity for players seeking to combine revenge with practicality. The Killable Creatures mod can be found on Nexus Mods, but players should note that installation of the UE4SS mod is a prerequisite for its functionality.
