YouTube has embarked on yet another redesign, this time testing a layout that could significantly alter the user experience for its mobile app. The latest iteration of the interface has stirred mixed feelings, particularly among users accustomed to the familiar placement of the Subscriptions tab.

Changes to Navigation

Upon launching the app, users may notice that the Subscriptions tab has been moved from its traditional position in the bottom navigation bar to a new secondary menu situated just below the app’s logo. This shift introduces an additional “Home” tab alongside the existing one, while the Subscriptions button now occupies a less prominent space. Tapping on Subscriptions still brings up the list of followed content, but the absence of its dedicated spot raises questions about usability.

YouTube has confirmed that this is part of an experimental phase. “If you are part of this experiment, you might notice a few placement changes to your Home and Subscriptions feeds. Specifically, we’re testing a shift in the placement of the Subscriptions feed, moving it from the bottom navigation bar to the top of your screen as part of a new, swipeable Subscriptions and Home feed tab experience…”

While the redesign aims to streamline navigation, some users express concern over the practicality of these changes. The new layout could prove challenging for those accustomed to quick access to their Subscriptions, especially on today’s taller smartphones. Additionally, the introduction of a “Create” label for the Plus icon hints at potential AI-driven creation tools, yet many users feel this does not justify the significant alteration in navigation.

Fortunately, it appears that this redesign is not set to roll out imminently. YouTube’s official communications suggest that the changes are still in the testing phase. Users have reported varying experiences, with some encountering glitches that temporarily hide the new navigation options. A simple restart of the app often restores the previous interface, indicating that the redesign is not yet fully integrated.

As anticipation builds around Google I/O, where the company may unveil further developments, users remain hopeful that the current layout will remain intact. For those who prioritize the Subscriptions feature, voicing feedback during this testing phase could influence the final design. Engaging with the platform and sharing experiences may help shape a more user-friendly interface moving forward.
