In a significant move to bolster the credibility of its AI-generated content, Google is enhancing its AI Overviews and Search functionalities. The integration of Preferred Sources support is designed to provide users with more reliable answers, while the AI Mode has firmly established itself as a cornerstone of the Google Search experience. This was underscored during the company’s recent earnings call, where it was noted that AI-driven Search has been a catalyst for growth. Following a major redesign unveiled at the I/O event earlier this month, Google is now rolling out additional changes aimed at fostering trust and authenticity in AI-generated responses.

While the Preferred Sources feature already exists in standard Google Search, allowing users to curate their trusted websites, its integration into AI Overviews has sparked discussions about its visibility. Currently, the labels appear only when users hover over the sources section or check the link panel on the right side. Some industry observers suggest that a more direct presentation within the AI Overview would enhance user experience, yet this development is certainly a step forward.

More notably, Google is now prioritizing the display of actual articles beneath AI Overviews. When users search for trending topics or breaking news, they will encounter a more prominent carousel showcasing original reporting, akin to the Top Stories feature in traditional Search results.

In addition, Google is expanding its “Highly Cited” labels across Search results. These labels serve to spotlight original reporting that is frequently referenced by other media outlets, thereby assisting users in identifying authoritative sources more effectively.

These enhancements come on the heels of a recent incident where former Google CEO Eric Schmidt faced criticism during a graduation speech discussing AI. It is evident that Google remains committed to its AI initiatives, and these updates reflect a concerted effort to ensure that original publisher content is preserved and highlighted alongside AI-generated information.
