Steam may have just thrown its weight behind bullet heaven, but last week’s standout game was a one-of-a-kind bullet hell FPS

Innovative Gameplay in Luna Abyss

Last week, the gaming community was abuzz with the announcement of Steam’s official tag for the latest entries in the burgeoning Vampire Survivors genre, dubbing it the “bullet heaven” week. However, amidst this celebration of genre evolution, one title stood out distinctly from the crowd: Luna Abyss, a captivating bullet hell shooter that redefines the genre.

Luna Abyss draws inspiration from the critically acclaimed Returnal, transforming the traditional gameplay of dodging a barrage of 2D projectiles into an exhilarating experience of navigating through a three-dimensional landscape filled with vibrant, pulsating bullets. Players find themselves immersed in a world where they must skillfully maneuver through intricate patterns of fire while simultaneously returning fire at relentless foes.

Despite the bullet hell genre being over three decades old, Luna Abyss breathes new life into it by adopting a first-person perspective. This innovative approach removes the peripheral vision advantage that titles like Returnal provide, creating a more intense and focused gameplay experience. My first encounter with the game was two years ago during a demo, and it left a lasting impression, as I realized I had never played anything quite like it before.

The game’s design, featuring a stunning array of orbs and obelisks, showcases the potential for bullet hell first-person shooters to carve out their niche in the gaming landscape. As Luna Abyss continues to garner attention, one can only hope that future installments will benefit from the expertise of developers from classic boomer shooters like Amid Evil or Boltgun, enriching the arsenal with greater depth and variety.
