With Intelligent Terminal, Microsoft is reinventing the Windows terminal

The terminal, once considered a relic of computing’s past, is experiencing a renaissance, largely fueled by the rise of innovative coding tools such as Claude Code. Despite its resurgence, the terminal’s core functionality has remained relatively unchanged since its inception as the primary interface for computer interaction.

Recent developments in terminal technology have been spearheaded by companies like Warp, which have introduced new features that enhance the coding experience. On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled its plans to reimagine the terminal in Windows 11 with the launch of the Intelligent Terminal. This experimental release aims to integrate coding agents directly into the terminal environment.

“Developers will be able to have their favorite agent, whether that’s GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, Codex, or others help them right in the terminal.”

As explained by Jatinder Mann, a partner director of product management at Microsoft, the Intelligent Terminal is designed to streamline the developer’s workflow. Currently, developers often find themselves switching between the terminal and chat windows to troubleshoot issues. Mann highlights this inefficiency, stating, “You’re in a terminal, you hit an error, you copy it, you switch to your chat window with your favorite agent, you paste it, explain the context, get an answer, and you switch back. That feels broken.”

The Intelligent Terminal aims to address this disconnect by allowing developers to receive real-time assistance directly within the terminal. For instance, if a command fails, the terminal can automatically detect the error and prompt the developer with a suggestion for a fix, all with a simple click. This capability stems from the terminal’s understanding of the live state of the shell.

Moreover, recognizing that customization is key for many developers, the Intelligent Terminal allows agents to be displayed in various formats—whether in a background tab, side pane, or at the bottom of the screen. For those who prefer a more traditional approach, the option to disable the agent entirely remains available, catering to users who still favor the tried-and-true method of copying and pasting from resources like StackOverflow.
