The Windows 11 Field Guide has undergone a significant transformation, now rebranded as the Windows 11 Field Guide 2026 edition. This updated version encompasses all supported iterations of Windows 11—24H2, 25H2, and 26H1—while highlighting both new and existing features that Microsoft continues to roll out for its users. The guide is set to evolve throughout 2026, adapting to recent changes and aiming for a more streamlined and user-friendly format. This ambitious endeavor will require considerable effort and will likely unfold over several editions.
Content Revisions and Enhancements
The process of updating the guide involves a delicate balancing act—some changes will decrease the page count and file size, while others may have the opposite effect. The goal is to enhance the book’s utility as both a practical how-to resource and a reliable reference.
- Removal of Outdated Content: In light of Windows 11’s continuous evolution, certain chapters have been deemed obsolete. Notably, the sections on Mail, Calendar, Microsoft 365, and Movies & TV have been removed, as these applications are no longer part of the Windows 11 ecosystem. Additionally, the Microsoft Store chapter has been revised to exclude references to content no longer available.
- Consolidation of Chapters: A new organizational format is in the works, with some progress already visible. For instance, three chapters concerning upgrades have been merged into one, and four chapters about installing Windows 11 have also been consolidated. This streamlining not only reduces size but also enhances clarity.
- Introduction of New Chapters: Recent functional updates necessitate the addition of new standalone chapters. New topics include Microsoft Paint, Notepad, Quick Machine Recovery, and a brief overview of account security basics, with more content on the horizon.
- Updating Existing Chapters: Some chapters, including those on Desktop and Passkeys, are currently being revised to align with the new format, ensuring they remain relevant and informative.
- Shifting Focus from Windows 10: Initially, the guide aimed to assist users transitioning from Windows 10. However, with over a billion users now on Windows 11 and the impending end of extended support for Windows 10, the focus has shifted. All “Where did it go?” sections have been eliminated, and plans are underway to integrate updated Install and Upgrade chapters.
- Refining Visuals: To optimize file sizes, the quality and dimensions of screenshots have been reevaluated. The upcoming format will feature retaken and cropped images, eliminating unnecessary visuals to further reduce page count.
- Bundling and Content Redistribution: A new companion book, De-Enshittify Windows 11, has been created, offering complementary content at a lower price point. Future bundles may include this book alongside the Field Guide, potentially incorporating additional smaller titles.
- Transition to Annual Editions: Moving forward, editions will be year-based rather than version-based, reflecting the functional similarities across supported Windows 11 versions. Existing owners will receive updates for free, continuing through the release of Windows 11 version 26H2 in late 2026.
- Exclusive Access for Thurrott Premium Members: As with previous editions, Thurrott Premium members will enjoy complimentary access to the Windows 11 Field Guide 2026 edition.
As the guide evolves, it promises to remain a vital resource for users navigating the ever-changing landscape of Windows 11.
