Microsoft Announces New Insider Builds, a Bit of 26H2 News

Microsoft has unveiled five new Windows Insider Preview builds, alongside anticipated updates regarding Windows 11 version 26H2. In a recent announcement, Stephen Lines from Microsoft shared insights about these developments, stating, “We have new releases today with builds across Beta and Experimental, including Windows 11 version 26H2 for Experimental.”

Devices already enrolled in the Experimental channel will soon see their versioning updated to 26H2, which can be verified under Settings > System > About or by using the winver command. For those currently in the Beta channel wishing to transition to Experimental, the process is straightforward: navigate to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program. It’s worth noting that reverting back to Beta is also an option, without necessitating a complete Windows reinstall.

While the specifics remain somewhat ambiguous, it appears that users with PCs on Experimental for versions 24H2 or 25H2 will soon make the leap to 26H2, as both versions are currently supported and expected to be upgraded around October. However, there exists a Future Platforms sub-channel within Experimental, leaving room for uncertainty regarding the transition process. A few updates on various PCs may shed light on this situation.

For those operating a Snapdragon X2-based PC running Windows 11 on Arm, the current version is 26H1. Microsoft has previously indicated that these devices will not receive an update to 26H2. Instead, users can anticipate a pathway to a future Windows release, which may potentially be designated as Windows 12, though details remain undisclosed.
