Cybercrime Investigation Uncovers Malicious Software Operation
In a significant development in the realm of cybercrime, law enforcement officials in the Grodno region have apprehended a 35-year-old resident of Svetlogorsk. This individual has been allegedly profiting from the distribution of malicious software over several years.
The suspect is reported to have modified a hidden virus miner, embedding its code within free torrent downloads. Upon downloading these files, the software would stealthily activate on the user’s computer, commandeering the processing power to mine cryptocurrency. This unauthorized activity not only generated revenue for the hacker but also severely hampered the performance of the affected machines.
Estimates suggest that the hacker’s illicit earnings reached approximately 1,000 Belarusian rubles each month. At the time of his arrest, the virus was reportedly operational on over 500 computers across Belarus and neighboring countries.
Investigators are currently working to identify all victims affected during the course of this criminal operation. An official criminal case has been initiated, marking a crucial step in addressing the growing threat of cybercrime in the region.
