Microsoft has released new preview versions in the Windows Insider channels, enhancing the taskbar experience.
The latest Insider Preview versions for Windows 11 focus on refining the taskbar. This update is part of a broader rollout of the new Insider channel structure, which is gradually becoming available to all users through the update settings. In a recent blog post, Microsoft detailed these changes, particularly highlighting the introduction of a new option called “Taskbar size” in the “Experimental” release channel (Build 26300.8758). While specific size options have yet to be disclosed, early screenshots indicate a default setting of “Small.” This feature, combined with the ability to dock the taskbar on any side of the monitor, aims to address some of the most common user criticisms following the initial launch of Windows 11.
Interestingly, the updates also mention improvements to system sounds when Windows is in dark mode. Additionally, users can expect more reliable thumbnail previews for cloud files within the File Explorer’s preview panel. The Beta Preview (Build 26220.8754) includes these dark mode sound enhancements, alongside fixes for OneDrive shortcuts that had ceased functioning in admin mode.
Reduced Insider Versions
Since April, Microsoft has been undertaking a significant restructuring of the Insider Preview Program. The focus has shifted from four preview channels to primarily two: Experimental and Beta, with the Release Preview channel remaining intact. This streamlined approach will gradually be reflected in general releases as well. Users will now see only these two versions under the “Windows Insider Program” settings in “Windows Updates,” eliminating the previous options like “Canary,” “Developer,” or “Beta.”
Furthermore, switching between Insider Preview channels has been simplified, allowing for more flexibility without being tied to specific versions within each channel. An in-place upgrade feature will enable users to switch channels at any time, enhancing the overall user experience.
