Microsoft just confirmed that this Windows 11 bug is hoarding up to 500GB of your storage

Microsoft has recently acknowledged a significant storage issue linked to the Capability Access Manager service in Windows 11. This bug has the potential to gradually consume substantial free space on users’ SSDs, with reports indicating that it could claim up to 500GB if left unchecked. According to findings from Windows Latest and various Reddit users, this problem has become a growing concern for many.

Understanding the Capability Access Manager Service

The Capability Access Manager, known by its service name camsvc, is designed to manage and track application permissions within the Windows ecosystem. It meticulously logs when applications request access to sensitive resources such as the webcam, microphone, and location data, storing these logs in a local SQLite database. Ideally, this log file should occupy only a few megabytes. However, due to a bug, it has been inflating to sizes that can reach gigabytes, stealthily consuming precious storage space.

The increase in file size appears to be gradual rather than abrupt, which complicates detection. Some users have reported astonishing figures, with the file taking up 200GB or even 513GB in extreme cases. For instance, Windows Latest noted that the file had ballooned to an impressive 89GB. This slow accumulation makes it particularly challenging for users to notice unless they consistently monitor their available storage.

Moreover, the file in question, CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal, is tucked away in the Windows System files under ‘System & reserved,’ making it even more elusive for the average user.

Identifying the Issue

To determine if your system is affected by this bug, navigate to Settings > Storage > System & reserved in Windows. If you observe that your system storage is utilizing hundreds of gigabytes, it’s likely that you are experiencing this issue. For a more definitive check, you can execute a command in the Windows Command Prompt, ensuring you run it as an administrator:

robocopy “C:ProgramDataMicrosoftWindowsCapabilityAccessManager” “%TEMP%CAMCheck” /L /B /R:0 /W:0 /BYTES /NP

If the CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal file shows only a few megabytes, you are in the clear. However, if it reveals a hefty size in gigabytes, you are indeed affected.

Microsoft’s Response and Future Updates

Fortunately, Microsoft has recognized the issue and has announced a fix that will be included in the upcoming June KB5095093 update for Windows 11. The changelog for this update states, “This update improves disk space usage for the CapabilityAccessManager.db-wal file.” Regular users can expect to receive this update starting July 14. While there are workarounds available to rebuild the file and reclaim lost space, it is advisable to wait for the official update to ensure a safe resolution.

Despite Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to enhance the Windows 11 experience, persistent bugs continue to surface, prompting some users to remain loyal to Windows 10. The stability of the older operating system, coupled with the absence of intrusive features like Copilot AI and ads, has made it an appealing choice for many. With the recent extension of security updates for Windows 10, it seems that a significant number of users are content to stay put for the time being.
