Assassin’s Creed Valhalla director comes back to Ubisoft to be game director for the entire brand

The recent leadership changes within the Assassin’s Creed franchise have taken an intriguing turn with the return of Eric Baptizat. Known for his pivotal role as the lead game designer on Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and as the director of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Baptizat rejoined Ubisoft after a brief hiatus. His return marks a significant moment for the brand, as he steps into the role of game director for the entire Assassin’s Creed series.

Significant Contributions and Career Journey

Jean Guesdon, head of content for Assassin’s Creed, took to LinkedIn to express his enthusiasm about Baptizat’s return, stating, “Eric needs no introduction in this universe.” With a remarkable 16-year tenure at Ubisoft, Baptizat has made substantial contributions to several key titles, including Black Flag, Origins, and Valhalla. His passion for gameplay and deep-rooted connection to the franchise are well recognized within the gaming community.

Baptizat’s career began with various lesser-known projects before he took the lead as game designer on James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game. While that title did not achieve critical acclaim, it was his subsequent work on Black Flag that truly showcased his talent. Following this success, he contributed to Unity and Origins before ascending to the role of game director for Valhalla. In 2021, Baptizat departed Ubisoft for EA Motive, where he directed the Dead Space remake and later served as game design director on Battlefield 6.

His return to Ubisoft is seen as a positive development, signaling a potential revitalization for the company. While Baptizat alone may not be the solution to all of Ubisoft’s challenges, his involvement brings back a familiar face associated with some of the franchise’s most beloved titles, particularly Black Flag, which has recently enjoyed renewed popularity in its Resynced version.
