The latest Expeditions game launches into early access today, and I can’t think of a better setting for the series than feudal Japan

In a remarkable evolution of the Expeditions series, Campfire Cabal has unveiled its latest installment, Expeditions: Samurai, now available in early access on Steam. This new entry transports players from the familiar landscapes of ancient Rome to the intricate world of feudal Japan, where history takes an intriguing turn. In this alternate narrative, the legendary William Adams, often regarded as the first European Samurai, never sets foot in Japan. Instead, players assume the role of a custom character who arrives on the shores of Honshu aboard the Dutch frigate De Albatros, just as Japan’s Daimyos prepare for the climactic battles of the Sengoku era.

Enhanced Gameplay Features

True to the series’ hallmark, Expeditions: Samurai offers a vast world ripe for exploration, a campaign steeped in political intrigue, and turn-based tactical combat. However, this installment introduces several innovative elements that enhance the overall experience.

  • Expanded Companion System: The number of companion characters has increased from five to eight, each with unique backstories and relationships that can evolve from rivals to romantic interests.
  • Stealth Mechanics: Drawing inspiration from its Japanese setting, the combat system now emphasizes stealth. Players can navigate battlefields quietly, setting up ambushes in real-time and utilizing an array of gadgets to level the playing field against larger forces. This design echoes the tactical depth found in games like Shadow Tactics.
  • Cooperative Play: A significant addition to the series is the introduction of cooperative gameplay. Players can invite a friend to join their adventure, with the second player controlling a twin of the main character. This feature not only enhances tactical coordination, allowing for simultaneous stealth takedowns, but also introduces an element of competition for decision-making and NPC interactions.

As it stands, Expeditions: Samurai offers a robust experience with five main quests, three side quests, and 14 distinct locations. Looking ahead, Campfire Cabal has laid out an ambitious roadmap for the game’s development. The initial alpha update promises to introduce new weapons, armor, and character customization options, while a subsequent update will expand the storyline with seven additional main quests and three extra side quests.

With a clear vision for its launch state, the final version of Expeditions: Samurai aims to include over 35 side quests, a player village, crafting mechanics, and engaging mini-games. While the game is projected to complete its development by early 2027, early adopters can enjoy a lower price by purchasing it now.
