Linux May Soon Get PC Game Pass via Open-Source Project

Xbox Game Pass Expands Horizons with Open-Source Initiative

In a notable shift within the gaming landscape, Xbox has recently unveiled a series of adjustments to its Game Pass offering, including a reduction in pricing. This move has sparked interest among open-source developers, particularly those involved with the Heroic Games Launcher, who have expressed their desire to broaden access to PC Game Pass beyond the confines of Windows PCs and handheld devices.

Enter Xodus, a promising new open-source project that aims to bridge this gap by bringing PC Game Pass games to Linux and macOS platforms. Although still in its early stages, Xodus is set to leverage Valve’s Proton alongside custom, reverse-engineered runtimes, with the goal of enabling seamless gameplay for Game Pass titles on alternative operating systems.

Previously, gamers on Linux had limited options for accessing Game Pass titles, primarily relying on Xbox Cloud game streaming. However, this method often faced challenges related to latency and internet connectivity, which could detract from the overall gaming experience. Should Xodus achieve its ambitious objectives, it could potentially offer a level of performance comparable to running traditional Windows games on Linux via Steam and Proton.

The project team has outlined several key initiatives on their development roadmap. Notably, they plan to incorporate support for third-party launchers such as Heroic, Lutris, and Bottles. This integration would allow users to install games through Xodus and subsequently launch them via Steam, mirroring the functionality of any non-Steam game.

In a recent discussion on Reddit, imLinguin, one of the developers behind Xodus, shared insights into the project’s progress. The team has successfully navigated the complexities of authorization and game downloads, and they are now poised to advance into game SDK development. While the ability to download games has been established, the current focus remains on ensuring that these titles can run effectively on Linux.
