Modders are working on porting Xbox and PC Game Pass to Linux

Xodus Project: A New Frontier for Gaming on Linux and macOS

The ambitious project known as Xodus is set to revolutionize the gaming landscape for Linux and macOS users, enabling them to access Xbox PC and PC Game Pass subscriptions without the need for Windows. Spearheaded by a dedicated team of developers and modders behind the Heroic Game Launcher, Xodus is an open-source initiative that builds upon the existing capabilities of the Heroic Game Launcher, which has already facilitated gameplay from platforms such as the Epic Games Store, GOG, and Amazon Prime Games.

With the Xbox app and PC Game Pass currently exclusive to Windows, Xodus aims to bridge this gap by providing an alternative pathway for users on different operating systems to engage with the extensive Xbox library. The Xbox PC platform serves as both a game store and a client for accessing the vast catalog of PC Game Pass titles, and Xodus seeks to replicate this functionality for its users.

Progress on the project has been noteworthy. The development team has successfully created a functioning Xbox authorization system, allowing users to log in to their Microsoft accounts, verify licenses, and identify which games are available through Game Pass. Following this initial step, Xodus will enable users to install these games seamlessly.

However, the journey does not end with authorization and installation. The primary challenge lies in launching the games themselves. To achieve this, the developers are engaging in reverse engineering of essential components and are concentrating on modern Microsoft technologies, including the Game Development Kit (GDK) and the MSIXVC format.

It is important to note that while the project holds great promise, certain limitations are anticipated. For instance, older Universal Windows Platform (UWP) games released during the Windows 8 era and early versions of Windows 10 may not be compatible. A notable example mentioned by the developers is Forza Horizon 3, which is unlikely to function within the new framework.

Furthermore, even with the implementation of Xbox PC support, launching the games will still require the use of compatible Linux technologies, such as Wine, DXVK, or VKD3D-Proton. This means that achieving full compatibility with the Game Pass catalog will represent a significant and intricate phase of development for the Xodus team.
