Changes to the Copilot Experience
According to a recent Microsoft Support document, the updated Copilot app will feature a more cohesive design and improved navigation. Users can expect changes in appearance and functionality, including adjustments to sign-in processes and feature accessibility. The unified app will simply be branded as “Copilot,” consolidating the previous separate experiences into one.
While the integration promises a smoother experience for most users, Microsoft has indicated that certain features will be retired as part of this unification. Notable changes include:
- Group Chat
- All group chat threads, messages, and images will not carry forward after August 18, 2026.
- Users are advised to manually copy or download any content they wish to retain.
- Podcasts
- The Podcasts feature will be fully retired on August 18, 2026.
- Post-retirement, users will be unable to create or access podcasts within Copilot.
- Individual podcast files can still be downloaded prior to the retirement date.
- Deep Research
- This feature will be retired for consumer users starting August 18, 2026.
- While existing Deep Research content will remain accessible, the feature itself will no longer be available.
For users operating with work or school accounts, the unified Copilot app will also be available, maintaining a clear distinction between personal and professional data. Microsoft assures that security and compliance measures will remain intact, ensuring that organizational data is not shared across accounts.
In terms of data migration, Microsoft has confirmed that all existing Copilot data—excluding the features being phased out—will transition seamlessly to the new app. Users need not take any action to preserve their chats and data; this will occur automatically as the unified app becomes available on their devices.
The rollout of the unified Copilot experience is set to begin today, although it will occur in phases. Mobile users will see the changes first, with updates for Windows and macOS anticipated to follow by mid-September. The complete rollout schedule is as follows:
- Mid-August 2026 — Global rollout begins for mobile and web apps; early-access opt-in opens for Windows and Mac apps.
- Late August 2026 — Standard rollout of the URL redirect begins.
- Mid-September 2026 — Global rollout for Windows and Mac apps commences.
- Late September 2026 — Deferred rollout of the URL redirect begins for the web app.
