In a recent exploration of the early days of League of Legends, content creator Necrit, alongside Riot Games’ Paul “Pabro” Bellezza, unveiled a fascinating glimpse into the game’s origins. The journey takes us back to a time when League was known as Onslaught: War of the Immortals, a concept that feels almost nostalgic, reminiscent of the musical landscape of the mid-2000s.

Rediscovering the Roots

Necrit’s video, released last Thursday, serves as a portal to this bygone era, showcasing an ancient investor pitch filled with video footage, design documents, and lore breakdowns. While some elements had previously leaked, the new details provide a richer understanding of the game’s initial vision.

The transformation from Onslaught to League of Legends is striking. Gone is the familiar Summoner’s Rift, replaced by a vibrant cityscape divided into realms of “order” and “chaos.” Players would have taken on the role of customizable immortals, strategically deploying them during pivotal moments in battle. This unique mechanic required players to pledge allegiance to one of the two realms, adding a layer of depth to the gameplay experience.

Among the champions, some familiar faces remain, albeit with notable changes. Annie still wields her fiery teddy bear minion, while Sion sports an unexpected beard, and Singed has been rebranded as Zij. The lore, too, reflects the era’s penchant for drama, featuring a world where two factions coexisted until a cataclysmic event unleashed chaos upon existence itself. Riot’s logo, depicted in the pitch video, even bears a strikingly ominous blood-red hue.

As players reminisce about League of Legends Classic, it becomes evident that the exploration of its roots has only just begun. The nostalgia for a time when Sion’s beard was highlighter-orange and the game bore little resemblance to its current form is palpable. The journey back to these early concepts not only enriches the understanding of the game’s evolution but also highlights the creative risks taken by Riot Games in its formative years.
