Antivirus software tips from Ely Computer Centre director

In the realm of digital security, a prevalent misconception persists: the belief that installing antivirus software guarantees complete safety for your computer. While antivirus solutions undoubtedly serve as a crucial layer of defense, they are not a panacea against every conceivable threat, especially when the software in question is no longer supported.

As software ages, it inevitably becomes susceptible to security vulnerabilities. During the support lifecycle, manufacturers diligently release updates to address these weaknesses. However, once support ceases, any newly discovered vulnerabilities remain unaddressed, leaving systems open to exploitation by malicious actors.

Understanding the Risks of Unsupported Software

A current and significant example of this issue is Windows 10. Microsoft officially ended support for Windows 10 in October 2025. Following this date, the majority of users will no longer receive security updates. Consequently, as new vulnerabilities are identified, computers operating on Windows 10 will find themselves increasingly at risk, regardless of the effectiveness of their antivirus software.

Many users may not even be aware of which version of Windows they are currently utilizing. A simple method to identify Windows 10 is to examine the Start button located in the bottom-left corner of the screen. If the Start button is represented by four black squares, it is likely that the computer is running Windows 10 and should be evaluated for potential upgrades.

For numerous older computers, upgrading to Windows 11 may not be feasible due to hardware limitations set by Microsoft. In such instances, the most prudent course of action is often to replace the outdated device with one that supports Windows 11, rather than continuing to operate an unsupported system.

If there is any uncertainty regarding whether your computer is running Windows 10 or if it can be upgraded, seeking professional advice sooner rather than later is highly advisable.
