In a recent update, Microsoft has made notable enhancements to the taskbar, allowing users to tailor their experience more closely to their preferences. This can be easily accessed through Settings → Personalization → Taskbar → Taskbar behavior → Taskbar position.
Among the most intriguing changes is the introduction of a smaller taskbar option. In “Small” mode, both the icons and the height of the taskbar are minimized, providing a more streamlined interface that is particularly beneficial for users with smaller screens. However, it’s important to note that this compact version can only be positioned at the top or bottom of the screen.
Additionally, the Start menu has received a fresh wave of customization options. The previously named “Recommended” section has been rebranded to “Recently used,” and users now have the ability to hide their name and profile picture within the Start menu. With separate toggles, individuals can independently manage the visibility of pinned apps, recommended content, and all apps, allowing for a more personalized workspace.
Looking ahead, Microsoft plans to introduce further flexibility with options to choose between small and large layouts, alongside an automatic resize feature that will enhance usability.
Search and File Explorer improvements
In tandem with these updates, Microsoft has also revamped Windows Search, enhancing the clarity of the search interface. Future iterations will provide clearer indications of whether search results stem from an app, Settings, a local file, the web, or the Microsoft Store.
For those who prefer a more focused search experience, there is the option to disable web or Store results from appearing alongside local results through the privacy and search settings. Furthermore, Windows will now automatically index frequently used folders, streamlining future searches and improving overall efficiency.
