Netflix‘s Minecraft animated series has recently received a significant update, alleviating concerns about its potential cancellation after a prolonged period of silence. Jens Bergensten, Chief Creative Officer at Mojang Studios, took to Bluesky to confirm the project’s ongoing status. In response to a fan’s inquiry regarding the series, which last garnered attention following the 2025 Annecy Animation Festival, Bergensten assured, “Yes, we are still working on it!”
Why Netflix’s Minecraft animated series isn’t canceled
Contrary to speculation, Netflix’s Minecraft animated series remains very much alive, with production actively progressing. The streaming giant has reiterated to What’s on Netflix that work continues, although specific details regarding a release date or a comprehensive production timeline are still under wraps.
The series was first unveiled in 2024 during the celebration of the game’s 15th anniversary, promising an original narrative featuring new characters. Initially, Flying Bark was announced as the animation studio responsible for the project, but subsequent reports have indicated that both WildBrain and Flying Bark are collaborating on the endeavor.
Designed as a 30-minute CG-animated action-adventure comedy, the series boasts a talented team, including showrunners and executive producers Kevin Adams and Joe Ksander, with A.C. Bradley serving as the head writer. The last significant public update occurred at the Annecy festival in June 2025, where Netflix introduced key members of the creative team and showcased early materials from the series. However, the absence of any substantial updates during Netflix’s 2026 Annecy presentation contributed to growing uncertainty among fans.
As of now, an official premiere date remains elusive. Estimates from What’s on Netflix suggest that the series could debut as early as 2027, though a 2028 release is also a possibility. Interestingly, the animated series may be positioned to launch after the anticipated A Minecraft Movie Squared, a live-action sequel that began filming in New Zealand in May 2026 and is slated for theatrical release on July 23, 2027.
