In today’s digital landscape, understanding how to manage power settings on your computer can lead to significant benefits, whether you are using a laptop or a desktop. For laptop users, these settings can extend battery life, while desktop users can enjoy reduced energy consumption and lower electricity bills.

It’s essential to familiarize yourself with the various power management options available in your operating system. Often, users leave default settings unchanged, missing out on potential energy savings. Here, we explore the power settings in the latest versions of Windows 11 and macOS 27 Golden Gate, keeping in mind that interfaces may vary with different software versions.

To access power options in Windows, navigate to Settings from the Start menu, then select System > Power for desktops or System > Power & battery for laptops. At the top of the screen, you will find Energy recommendations, which guide you toward the most energy-efficient settings.

The first setting to consider is Power Mode, offering three choices for both battery and plugged-in scenarios: Best Power Efficiency, Balanced, and Best Performance. For most users, Balanced strikes a reasonable compromise between performance and energy consumption.

Next, explore the Screen, sleep, & hibernate time-outs, where you can adjust how long your system waits before entering these energy-saving modes. Shorter time-outs can lead to reduced energy usage, particularly beneficial for laptop users.

Another notable feature is Energy Saver, which activates a low-power mode that minimizes background activity, dims the display, pauses updates, and disables some visual effects. This mode can be toggled manually or set to activate automatically when battery levels drop below a specified threshold.

Lastly, ensure your Power & sleep button controls are configured to your preference. This setting determines the action taken when you press the physical buttons on your device, preventing any confusion between sleep and shutdown modes.

On macOS, the distinction between desktop and laptop power settings is more pronounced. Access System Settings from the Apple menu on a desktop Mac to find the Energy menu, while a MacBook will present a Battery menu.

Both menus offer similar options, but laptops provide additional battery-usage statistics and configurations for both battery and plugged-in power. The Low Power Mode option reduces background activity and dims the screen to conserve energy.

For Macs equipped with the latest Apple Silicon processors, an Energy Mode drop-down allows users to select their preferred balance between performance and power consumption, with options for Low Power, Automatic, and High Power.

Further settings can be accessed under the Options button, including the ability to prevent the system from automatically sleeping when idle and optimizing video streaming performance on battery power. These settings enable users to tailor their experience based on their energy needs.

Note that screen time-out settings are located under Lock Screen in System Settings. Adjusting the delay before the display turns off can significantly impact power consumption, with shorter delays leading to lower energy use—though it’s essential to find a balance that suits your workflow.
