Microsoft has announced that the September 2026 Patch Tuesday updates have resolved a significant issue affecting desktop settings on certain Windows devices. This announcement comes in response to a surge of user complaints regarding unexpected changes to their desktop backgrounds.
Details of the Issue
Last week, the tech giant confirmed that a bug had emerged following the installation of the KB5120998 August 2026 preview update on Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 systems. Users reported that their desktop wallpapers had inexplicably reverted to a solid black background. Microsoft explained that this glitch occurs when desktop settings fail to load correctly after the installation of the updates released on August 27, 2026.
According to Microsoft, “On affected devices, attempting to manually restore customized settings does not work. This is because the issue prevents the correct loading of settings, regardless of their value. In this case, a default black background is used instead.” The problem extended beyond just the wallpaper; it also impacted mouse settings, complicating efforts to revert to previous configurations.
Update Recommendations
While the update in question was optional, users who had enabled the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” feature may have found it installed automatically. Following the release of this month’s cumulative update, Microsoft has urged users to update their devices to benefit from the fix.
In a recent statement, Microsoft noted, “This issue was resolved by Windows updates released September 8, 2026 (KB5124008), and later. We recommend you install the latest security update for your device as it contains important improvements and issue resolutions, including this one.”
This is not the first time Microsoft has faced such challenges. A similar issue arose in February 2020, when the KB4539602 update for Windows 7 disrupted desktop wallpaper functionality, causing images in ‘Stretch’ mode to display as a blank black screen. The company’s ongoing commitment to addressing these issues reflects its dedication to enhancing user experience across its platforms.
