Valve Makes Lepton Open-Source for Steam Frame Compatibility
After the recent launch of the Steam Frame, Valve has taken a significant step by making Lepton, the compatibility layer that allows the Steam Frame to run Android games, open-source. This move comes after the formal announcement of Lepton back in March 2026, alongside the introduction of the Steam Frame Verified program requirements.
The project is now available on Valve’s GitLab repository, where detailed information about Lepton’s foundation and its distinctions from Android itself can be found. With Lepton now open-source, there are several implications for gaming on the Steam Frame and on SteamOS in general.
Valve has stated that the primary purpose of Lepton is to assist game developers in bringing their VR Android games to the Steam Frame. While other potential use cases exist, they were not the primary focus during development and may not be as refined.
Utilizing components from Waydroid, Anbox, Halium, and Hybris, Lepton combines Valve’s proprietary code with portions of the AOSP. It also integrates host system libraries such as graphics drivers, Steam libraries, and Vulkan layers, while streamlining certain aspects of Android for enhanced efficiency.
It is anticipated that open-source developers may choose to directly utilize Lepton’s code or draw insights from Valve’s implementation to adapt it for various applications. There is also the possibility of forking the project to introduce new features, streamline its functionality, or optimize it further, similar to previous instances with CachyOS-Proton and Proton-GE.
