Microsoft has successfully addressed a notable issue within its Windows Security framework, which had erroneously indicated that Microsoft Defender Antivirus was disabled. This resolution was delivered through Defender platform update 4.18.26080.4, rolled out on September 17, as reported by Windows Latest.
Details of the Update
The update is designed to install automatically, eliminating the need for users to take any manual steps, unless they have opted to block mandatory security updates via Group Policy or the Registry Editor. Users had been experiencing false alerts that typically appeared during system boot and sporadically thereafter, even when notifications were disabled. Intriguingly, clicking on the alert merely redirected users to the Windows Security home tab, where all settings appeared to be functioning normally.
Microsoft first acknowledged the issue on August 28, noting that it impacted all supported versions of Windows and Windows Server utilizing the latest Defender updates. However, the company did not specify which update had triggered the erroneous notifications. Given that Defender updates are released daily, pinpointing a specific Knowledge Base (KB) article for rollback was not feasible.
Interestingly, users within the Windows Insider program reported encountering similar warnings as early as June. TechPowerUp initially highlighted this alert, with several staff members also experiencing the glitch. The time lapse of nearly three weeks between Microsoft’s acknowledgment of the problem and the subsequent fix has raised eyebrows, particularly for a bug that was so prominently displayed to users.
