In the realm of game development, few sequences can rival the intensity and creativity found in the Chimera Tank boss fight from Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. This pivotal confrontation, featuring protagonist V and President Myers against a formidable, Ghost in the Shell-inspired spider-tank, unfolds within the depths of a Barghest facility. As the explosive climax of Phantom Liberty’s opening act, it showcases the intricate collaboration required to bring such a scene to life.
Behind the Scenes of the Chimera Tank
During a recent episode of CD Projekt’s official AnsweRED podcast, game director Gabe Amatangelo and creative director Igor Sarzyński delved into the multifaceted challenges encountered during the production of Cyberpunk 2077. They highlighted the Chimera Tank as a prime example of the convergence of various disciplines within game development. Amatangelo noted, “Sometimes we’re making content that’s a nexus point of different disciplines; the Chimera is a great example of that. It was gameplay, narrative, art, worldbuilding.”
Paweł Mielniczuk, the art director and co-host of the podcast, elaborated on the extensive process behind creating this boss fight. “I think when we were iterating, it was two years to make this boss fight work,” he shared. The tank itself underwent a staggering four iterations, with adjustments made to its equipment and weaponry. Sarzyński remarked that the Chimera’s construction stands as “one of the most expensive art assets I think ever.”
Reflecting on the development of this encounter offers insight into the dedication and effort that went into crafting a memorable gaming experience. Interestingly, upon experiencing the fight during the launch of Phantom Liberty, some players felt it could have benefited from a touch more balancing. The challenge of dismantling the tank proved to be one of the more arduous tasks within the expansion, evoking memories of the punishing battle with The Toad Prince in The Witcher 3: Hearts of Stone.
