One notable example from the report involves a hacker known as ‘barboris’, who shared code produced by ChatGPT on a malware forum. Despite limited coding experience, barboris managed to prompt the AI to generate code, demonstrating that even those with minimal technical skills can potentially harness AI for malicious purposes.

Assessing the Real Risk

However, it’s essential to temper these concerns with a dose of realism. ChatGPT, like any AI tool, is not infallible and can produce erroneous or nonsensical outputs, which could hinder an inexperienced hacker’s efforts. Martin Zugec, Technical Solutions Director at Bitdefender, emphasizes that the quality of malware generated by chatbots is generally subpar. He notes that those relying on AI for code creation likely lack the expertise needed to navigate the inherent limitations of these tools.

Zugec reassures that the current risk posed by chatbot-generated malware remains relatively low. The built-in safeguards of AI chatbots are designed to prevent the crafting of harmful code, and seasoned malware developers are likely to find more effective resources in public code repositories than through AI-generated outputs.

While the ability for inexperienced individuals to create functional viruses using ChatGPT is indeed possible, it is crucial to recognize that more adept hackers will continue to rely on their skills and established resources for more effective results.
